Why You Should Become a KTC Member?
Become a KTC Member to help us create a stronger Native Community. We are expanding our reach in providing cultural related classes with our communities’ diverse interests. There is a growing interest in our Elder’s group that meets regularly providing insight on our culture and traditional values. We can help you with equality referrals for training, education, employment, and social services. If we can establish a need and can demonstrate the need, then we go after the proper amount of funding to support the needs of our Community.
What is Tribal Membership
Per the KTC Enrollment Ordinance Tribal enrollment criteria are set forth in tribal constitution:KTC’s Constitution, Ordinance 06-01, lists the process for becoming a Tribal Member. There are two levels of membership for the Knik Tribe. The first are members who were originally recognized by the Department of Interior as Knik Tribe.
Base Members are: Any Lineal Descendant of a person from the Base Roll; Any person of Alaska Native Blood who resides in Upper Cook Inlet area and who is married to or adopted as a minor by either a person listed on the Base Roll or the lineal descendant of such a person; Any person who is adopted by the Tribe as provided in this ordinance.
Associate Members are: Any person at least one-quarter degree Native American Blood may, by adoption, be enrolled as a non-voting member of the Knik Tribe, at the sole discretion of the Council, if they are citizens of the United States of America and they have physically resided in the Upper Cook Inlet are for a period of at least one (1) year immediately prior to the date of their adoption into the Tribe. Such members shall be classified as Associate Members, except the right to vote in Tribal Elections.
A member of Knik Tribe may also be a member of another tribe, but shall not be entitled to dual benefits from the Federal Government because of such Dual Enrollment.
How Do I Apply for Enrollment at KTC?
Member Enrollment is easy after determining eligibility. The applicant fills out a membership application then submits it with the following required documents:
1. Certificate Degree of Indian Blood (CIB card) stating that you are at least one-quarter Alaska Native/American Indian. (We have applications for this is in our office.)
2. Birth Certificate, a certified photo static copy of a state issued birth certificate or other reliable evidence showing the name of applicant, date and place of birth, and names of biological parents as applicable.
3. Proof of Residence in the Mat-Su Valley for at least one (1) year prior to completion of the application. Example: (A copy of your electric bill.)
Once the Membership Application is received, the Membership Coordinator submits it to the Council for review. Completed applicants that meet eligibility criteria are considered for membership and council approved applications are enrolled as members of KTC.We have an application form available through the following:
